Always busy, delicious traditional pho, chicken and cabbage salad and passable spring rolls.

Thanh Ha (and Thanh Ha 2)

Victoria St, Richmond

Price: cheap

The initial reason I made the switch to this place (actually, both of these places are equally good) was because they always had banh xeo (a huge, saffron-coloured mungbean-and-stuff filled crispy pancake/crepe) unlike other restaurants who have it on the menu, and then routinely tell you it'll take 20 minutes, or even worse, that it's currently not available.

The rest of the menu is completely solid, too. They have all the classics - broken rice, pho, rice paper rolls, spring rolls, Vietnamese coleslaw, all sorts of vermicelli, as well as more unique dishes like the bamboo duck noodle soup. The one time I went there with my extended family, I finally got to try their '7-course beef banquet'. So much beef, but in such variety that it was nowhere near becoming monotonous. Good value if you're in a biggish group.

The only quibble about this place is the tables can be rather small - in true Vietnamese style, they like to squeeze you in - and fitting more than the banh xeo on the table can be a challenge! billyl
